The Many Benefits of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) – 6

SAFe Portfolio Kanban

In general, Agile recommends that you build the highest value items first, but so far Agile methods do not provide support with regards to what, when, how and why you determine what gives you the highest value. SAFe as usual, does not leave you stranded but provides you with the Portfolio Kanban; a visual tool for monitoring and managing workflow. This Kanban focuses on more than just moving work along, the tool supports leaders by providing a transparent and quantitative basis for economic decision making. The Portfolio Kanban is a method to visualize and manage the flow of Portfolio Epics, from ideation through analysis, implementation, and completion. It is one of several Kanban systems used throughout SAFe, including the Team, ART, and the Solution Kanban systems. The Portfolio Kanban helps align strategy and execution by identifying, communicating, and governing the selection of the largest and most strategic initiatives (Epics) for a SAFe portfolio. Listed below are some of the benefits that the SAFe Portfolio Kanban system provides to an enterprise:

  1. Visualizing Work: The Portfolio Kanban provides a visual representation of the Work In Progress, making it easier for teams and stakeholders to understand the status of different initiatives and the flow of value through the system.
  2. Improved Communication and Collaboration: By visualizing work, teams and stakeholders can have a shared understanding of the priorities, dependencies, and progress of various initiatives. This enhances communication and collaboration among different teams and individuals.
  3. Enhanced Flow and Efficiency: The Portfolio Kanban helps to identify bottlenecks and areas where work is stuck. By visualizing the flow of work, teams can optimize their processes, remove impediments, and improve the overall efficiency of the Portfolio.
  4. Better Decision-Making: With a clear visualization of the work, decision-makers can make more informed decisions about priorities, resource allocation, and the overall portfolio strategy. This helps in aligning the Portfolio with business objectives.
  5. Reduced Work in Progress (WIP): The Portfolio Kanban encourages the concept of limiting Work In Progress. By doing so, organizations can prevent overloading teams, reduce multitasking, and focus on completing work before starting new initiatives.
  6. Transparency and Accountability: The visual nature of the Portfolio Kanban promotes transparency, making it clear what is being worked on, by whom, and at what stage. This transparency fosters accountability as teams and individuals can be held responsible for their contributions.
  7. Continuous Improvement: The Portfolio Kanban supports the principles of continuous improvement by providing feedback on the Portfolio’s performance. Teams can regularly review and retrospect on their processes, identifying areas for improvement and making adjustments accordingly.
  8. Adaptability to Change: The visual nature of the Portfolio Kanban makes it easier for organizations to adapt to changes in priorities or market conditions. The framework allows for flexibility in reprioritizing work to respond to emerging opportunities or challenges.
  9. Alignment with Business Strategy: The Portfolio Kanban helps ensure that the work being done aligns with the overall business strategy. This alignment is crucial for organizations to deliver value that is in line with their strategic objectives.
  10. Facilitates Lean and Agile Principles: The SAFe Portfolio Kanban is aligned with Lean and Agile principles, helping organizations apply these principles at scale. This facilitates the adoption of an Agile mindset and culture throughout the organization.

It’s important to note that while the Portfolio Kanban is a valuable tool, its effectiveness depends on how well it is implemented and integrated into the overall SAFe framework within an organization. Successful adoption often requires a cultural shift, commitment from leadership, and ongoing dedication to continuous improvement.
